<br />
Good morning!<br />
<br />
Today, we are having another family reunion. (Woohoo!) This time, it's
with my dad's (step-dad, Jack's) side of the family. We even have some
of our favorite Texans with us!<br />
<br />
<div class="text_exposed_show">
One of my favorite things about reunions is watching the different
generations and seeing the similarities among them. The laughs (aka
snorts), the body language, the story telling manners... Even though
they weren't all raised together, there are family traits that are
STRONG among them and there is no denying who is related!<br />
<br />
...<br />
<br />
<br />
Saturday's Selections!<br />
<br />
Editing styles change throughout the years.<br />
<br />
Sometimes they change with the trends. And sometimes they change
simply because I get bored with a look that I've used for a while.<br />
<br />
On the left~ my former favorite b&w edit- sort of an old newspaper-like look.<br />
On the right~ my newer b&w edit of choice- more clean and contrasty.<br />
<br />
I still like both! <br />

<br />
Yes! Finally! A Kim Winey Photography camera class in Lancaster County! <br />
<br />
Manual Settings-Super Simplified is a non-intimidating time of learning how to adjust your camera's
settings to create consistent, properly exposed photos. Visual aids
& inspiring images will be used to explain the three parts of the
exposure triangle ~ ISO, aperture and shutter speed.<br />
To give everyone even more options, this year, I have broken my "Manual Settings
Simplified" class into two segments. I highly, highly recommend that
you opt for both sessions, but if shortness of time or shortness of
funds is a factor, you now have the option of fast-tracking and
attending session 1 only if that suits you.<br />
<br />
<br />
<b>Session 1 ~ $150 {6:00pm - 7:30pm} </b><br />

me for a non-intimidating time of learning how to adjust your camera's
settings to create consistent, properly exposed photos. Visual aids
& inspiring images will be used to explain the three parts of the
exposure triangle ~ ISO, aperture and shutter speed. <br />
<br />
During session 1 a small amount of time will be given to change the settings on your own camera
& observe the results of those changes. If time permits we will also have Q & A at the end of session 1.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<b>Session 2 ~ $150 {7:30pm-9:00pm}</b><br />
<br />
Manual Settings - Super Simplified Part 2!<br />
<br />
Now that the basics of the exposure triangle have been covered we will
touch on a few more important camera details, then time permitting, jump right into
additional hands-on practice time to more fully explore and understand
how shooting in manual mode works.<br />
<br />
<b><br />Sessions 1 & 2 combined in one day ~ $250 *A $50 savings* {6:00pm-9:00pm} </b><br />

.....<br />
<br />
<br />
<b>General Bootcamp Q & A~ </b><br />
<br />
<br />
Q: Should I bring a camera and if so, what kind?<br />
<br />
A:
Yes, please bring your digital camera! Part of getting a good grasp on
Manual Settings is learning where the dials and buttons are on YOUR
particular camera. You can bring a point and shoot or a DSLR, so long
as there is a Manual Mode option. It will appear as an "M", on your
mode dial. If you are unsure about your particular camera, please feel
free to give me a call and we'll figure it out, together!
{717-689-3277}<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Q: How should I prepare my camera?<br />
<br />
A:
You should have your battery fully charged, with a back up on hand, if
possible. Please bring a memory card or two, with LOTS of space to take
pictures. *If you can empty your card before the class, that would be
fabulous! Also, mental preparedness is key to any new adventure.
Please take a moment to warn your auto-setting that you will no longer
be needing its services.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Q: Do I need to bring anything else?<br />
<br />
A:
Yes. Please bring your camera's manual. You know... the little book
that came with your camera, that you glanced at, got overwhelmed with
and so now you're taking my class to decipher it. Yes... that's the
one. For bonus points, mark the sections that explain how to change
your ISO, aperture & shutter speed. This may save us a lot of time,
in class. If, like me, you threw out your English version and only
retained the Spanish copy, you can a) download the info from the
internet or b) don't worry about it and we'll figure it out, in class. <br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Q: What should I wear and are boots required?<br />
<br />
A:
Dress comfortably! I myself, will be wearing my work clothes. No, not
my striped, pink PJ's, though that is tempting... jeans and a nice
top. Boots are recommended in some locations, however they are not necessary in the Lancaster County spot. <br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Q: Will there be drinks or snacks at the Bootcamp?<br />
<br />
A: I can't really go more than 2 hours without food, so yes. For sure.
Yes. Hot coffee & tea, a cold beverage, and chocolate
will all be provided, at the very least. :)<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Additional questions may be left in the comments, below!<br />
<br />
Looking forward to another great year of knowledge sharing and growth for our photo-loving community!<br />
<br />
<br />
Warmly,<br />

<br />
<br />
......<br />
And so it was, as it is with all of us – Louis Koch was the earthly author of his story.<br />
His narrative was one filled with both great love and difficult
hardships from an early age. But his Lord, his heavenly Author, gave him
strong supporting characters to help him on his journey, and Louis'
story unfolded with more experiences and achievements than the average
teen protagonist.<br />
A deep faith in his Savior led him to enjoy
serving and participating in Velocity Student Ministry at Parker Hill
Church in Dickson City, Pa. He was also an avid outdoorsman, serving on
the board of the Lackawanna Valley Trout Unlimited Teens and as a
Pennsylvania State Representative in the Trout Unlimited Teen Summit
National Leadership Conference in Wisconsin. Additionally, Louis was
awarded first place in the PJAS (Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science)
competition in 2015.<br />
Always one to exceed in academics, Louis
was a distinguished honor roll student at Holy Cross High School
entering his junior year. He was a member of the Fictional Fanatics Club
and won the Young Writers Award in the short story category in 2013.
After receiving an academic scholarship, Louis was accepted into the IHM
(Immaculate Heart of Mary) Honors Program, which allowed dual
enrollment at Holy Cross and Marywood University. While in high school
he also participated in choir, archery, yearbook, and student
government. Perhaps most enjoyable to Louis was his longtime hobby of
creating flavorful cups of coffee and espresso for his friends and
family. <br />
At age 16, Louis's life was at a new peak. Reading from the outside, it seemed to be the writings of an epic tale of success.<br />
But for reasons that are still a mystery, Louis chose not to continue
his story with a semicolon, and instead ended his narrative, his life,
with heartbreaking question marks.<br />

Limited Edition Styled Sessions have become a mainstay here at Kim Winey Photography. They feed my creative soul and I can't imagine NOT offering them to my clients, now!</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Because they are such a unique experience I often receive questions about how they work. Here you can find some Q & A's explaining the process. Please leave comments below, if you have more!</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Q. What is a Limited Edition Styled Session?</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
A. Limited Edition Styled Sessions are photo shoots with a strong theme that feel like a page out of a storybook. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
All of the clothing, props, scene, hair styles, etc... are meticulously coordinated to produce an artistic interpretation of that theme. The children who enter into the scene take on the role of a character within that story.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
For example, in "la boutique de jardin", the story is of a quaint, French garden shoppe. The character is the young woman who owns the shop, - a charming, little lady who is a lover of plants, flowers and vintage finds.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">"la boutique de jardin"<br />

</tbody></table>
<span style="background-color: white; color: #1c1e21; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; white-space: pre-wrap;">Each scene is custom-made for each styled session.</span><br />
<br />
Everything in the scene is real. There is no photoshopping done to add elements to the photos.<br />
<br />
I design the scene and then with the help of my husband, Fred, and often interns or other small business collaborators- we build it, piece by piece. Once the photo sessions are finished, everything is torn down and with the exception of "le potager" the scene will likely never exist again. This ensures that every styled session is unique and truly one-of-a-kind!<br />

<div style="text-align: left;">
Q. Do you provide the props and clothing for Styled Sessions?</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
A. The props, yes! The clothing, some! I have a few articles of clothing and accessories in my "prop and clothing closest" that clients are welcome to use at no extra cost. However, clients also bring their own clothes and we combine them with my items to complete the looks!</div>

Q. If I need to purchase clothing, how do I know what type of clothing to pick?</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
A. I have Pinterest boards for all of my styled shoots. On the boards, you will find both inspiration photos for the session as well as photos of clothing suggestions. I often have links to the shops where you can purchase the clothing as well!</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I also ask to view all of the options you're considering, before you purchase to make sure we stay on the same creative page.<br />

<div style="text-align: left;">
Q. Can I request a theme for my child's Limited Edition Styled Session?</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
A. Yes, suggestions are always welcome! However, due to the large amount of work and financial investment involved in styled sessions, I need to create sessions that are open to several families. I also need to make sure that the concept is able to be created in a way that is lush and well put together. Having a personal connection to the theme is important to me as well, I've discovered. The more I feel moved by the theme, the better the session is!</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
If you would like a custom made Limited Edition Styled Session for your family only, that can be arranged. Prices for a custom-designed session vary depending on the cost of the props, rental of the property, as well as the time invested in preparation and set up.</div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
Q. How long do the sessions usually last?</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">

Q. How many photos will be taken during a styled session?<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>

</div>
<br />
Q. What will my child be doing during the session?<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
A. My goal is always to capture realistic photos of kids, vs posed/looking at the camera types of shots. In order to accomplish this, I always have activities planned for the session. The activities vary depending on the theme of the session.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
For example- in "The Potter's Farm Garden & Harvest" session, the kids were able to dig through the dirt and harvest potatoes!<br />

</div>
</div>
</div>
<br />
Generally speaking, we spend only a few minutes at each activity to keep the session interesting.<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I often include a drink or a snack with the styled sessions, as well! I'm a foodie... I just can't help myself.<br />

<div style="text-align: left;">
Q. What ages work best for styled sessions?</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
A. Since the sessions involve instructions and activities the best ages are usually from 3 and up. Younger children sometimes join the fun as well, but parents understand in advance that they will most likely do what they want, vs taking instructions. ;-)<br />

<div style="text-align: left;">
Q. Where do your styled sessions take place?</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
A. Styled sessions have taken place in Philadelphia and Northeastern PA, but most are now in Lancaster County, PA.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />

<div style="text-align: left;">
Q. Do you ever create styled shoots with only a few props.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
A. Sometimes, but not often. My goal is to create scenes that look so full and rich that people assume everything was already there. As if we simply showed up and used the space for our photos.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
There are a few exceptions though, one being "The Steamtown Train Station" sessions. Steamtown is a tourist stop, in Scranton, Pa. The location already has several fabulous backdrops, so a suitcase and a teddy bear are typically all we need to take along, to bring the scenes to life! Because of this, I can book sessions at Steamtown almost year round. Easy peasy!<br />

<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
Q. What are the costs of your Styled Sessions?</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
A. Styled sessions typically cost between $1,000 and $2,200, though this can vary greatly depending on what is chosen by the client.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Retainers (formerly called sitting fees) start at $250. Additional fees apply for multiple children & adults.<br />
<br />

"le potager" ~ The Kitchen Garden<br />
<br />
Over the next few months, my interns an<span class="text_exposed_show">d
I will be turning our raised beds and yarden nook into an ornamental
and edible garden area, inspired by French gardens of yesteryear.</span><br />
<br />
Since this will be a rather dramatic and lengthy time of preparation,
I'll be sharing the behind the scenes transformation of this space as it
progresses.<br />
<br />
As with all of my styled shoots, the planning begins in my head, and on Pinterest.<br />
<br />
Follow along here, to see the inspiration pins that are making me reeeally long for the yardening season to arrive!<br />

Kinda makes me want to give a bonus to those who book their sessions
BEFORE they see it all transform. Like a "believer's bonus". ;-)<br />

<b>This Sunday, February 14th, we are having out first "Class-y Party ~ Capturing the Camera Lover".</b><br />
<br />
This is a combination of both a class and a party. See what we did there? ;)<br />
<br />
For our class time, my hubby and I have put together a list of fun and EASY ideas for
both you and your special someone to help get you, the camera-lover,
into more photos. This is a non-techy class. All skill levels are
welcome
<br />
<br />

<b>On Saturday, February 20th, our "Manual Settings-Super Simplified" is taking place again. </b><br />
<br />
<br />
This is a non-intimidating time of learning how to adjust your camera's
settings to create consistent, properly exposed photos. Visual aids
& inspiring images will be used to explain the three parts of the
exposure triangle ~ ISO, aperture and shutter speed. <br />
<br />
Information about "MSSS" can be found <a href="http://kimwiney.blogspot.com/2016/01/its-time-for-another-manual-settings.html" target="_blank">here.</a><br />
<br />
*All silent seats are filled for this class. <br />
<br />
<b>To round out this month of love we are having a "Taking it to the Next Level" Bootcamp, on February 27th.</b><br />
<br />
<br />
<span class="fsl"><span class="text_exposed_show">During this class you will discover unique ways
to create photos filled with physical and emotional depth; story telling
photography; how to "read" available light; analyze photos; and more.<br /> <br />
Taking it to the next level is perfect for anyone looking to add some
"wow!" to their images. Knowing how to shoot in manual mode is
beneficial (really beneficial), but not necessary. </span></span><br />

A "Class-y Party"If you're like me and you love taking pictures, you're probably also like me... and you're hardly ever IN pictures.<br />
<br />
This can be sort of depressing especially after a vacation, when you're looking through albums and realize that you're not in one. single. photo. Or after the holidays you glance through your digitals and ohmywordithappenedagain... you are nowhere to be found.<br />
<br />
It's difficult to explain how truly bad this feels, unless you've experienced it. But in short, when you look at these collections of photos and you're not in any of them, it's almost like you weren't there. There is no tangible record of your existence in those moments. <br />
<br />
And it's just sad.<br />

<br />
<br />
Now that we're all depressed, let's talk about a possible solution I've been working on.<br />
<br />
I'm calling it the "Class-y Party - Capturing the camera lover." <br />
<br />
On Sunday, February 14th, in Dalton, Pa, we will have a fun, low key, and informative class + party. You do not have to come with a
spouse. Boyfriends, mothers, sisters, etc... can be your other half.
The idea is to bring the person who would be most likely to capture you
in photos, during this phase of your life. <br />
<br />
For our class time, I've put together a list of fun and EASY ideas for both you and your special someone to help get you, the camera-lover, into more photos. This is a non-techy class. All skill levels are welcome!<br />
<br />
The investment for the class-y party will be: $35 per "couple". OR $25 per couple, if you bring an
appetizer or dessert to share.<br />
<br />
<br />
The fun will begin at 6:30pm, and end at about 9:00pm. The attire is attractively casual. The location is a rustic cabin. The class portion of our evening will be held early on, followed by much mingling, eating, and putting our new skills into practice.<br />
<i class="_4-k1 img sp_6-ALyxN5kwE sx_085816"><u></u></i> <br />
Please RSVP, as we are limited in space.<br />
<br />
You can private message me on Facebook, email (kimwineyphotography@gmail.com) or call (717-689-3277) to secure your spots!<br />
<br />
Also, this class has been put to the real-life test! My hubby helped with the creation of the class and by following the suggestions in it we have greatly increased the number of photos that I am in. Now we have proof that I went on vacation, attended family gatherings and existed in general. Thank you, Fred & also to our son, Cman who picks up the camera duties now and then, as well. I love you both and I'm very happy to have photographic evidence of that love!<br />

I was content with one! After that, I planned to move on to "Taking it to the next level"and "Communications and Posing" But there are more women who are eager to learn how to get off of "auto" and get into intentional, creative, picture taking mode (aka manual mode), and I couldn't be happier to help them on that journey!<br />

To give everyone even more options, this year, I have broken my "Manual Settings
Simplified" class into two segments. I highly, highly recommend that
you opt for both sessions, but if shortness of time or shortness of
funds is a factor, you now have the option of fast-tracking and
attending session 1 only if that suits you.<br />

me for a non-intimidating time of learning how to adjust your camera's
settings to create consistent, properly exposed photos. Visual aids
& inspiring images will be used to explain the three parts of the
exposure triangle ~ ISO, aperture and shutter speed. <br />
<br />
During session 1 a small amount of time will be given to change the settings on your own camera
& observe the results of those changes. If time permits we will also have Q & A at the end of session 1.<br />
<br />
*You may opt to take just session 1 on February 20th and come back for
session 2 on a future Bootcamp day. Dates to be announced.*<br />
<br />
<br />
<b>Session 2 ~ $150 {11:15am-12:45pm}</b><br />
<br />
Manual Settings - Super Simplified Part 2!<br /><br />
Now that the basics of the exposure triangle have been covered we will
touch on a few more important camera details, then time permitting, jump right into
additional hands-on practice time to more fully explore and understand
how shooting in manual mode works.<br />
<br />
<b><br />Sessions 1 & 2 combined in one day ~ $250 *A $50 savings* {9:30am-12:45pm} </b><br />

<br />
<br />
<b>General Bootcamp Q & A~ </b><br />
<br />
<br />
Q: Should I bring a camera and if so, what kind?<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Q: How should I prepare my camera?<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Q: Do I need to bring anything else?<br />
<br />
A:
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Q: What should I wear and are boots required?<br />
<br />
A:
Dress comfortably! I myself, will be wearing my work clothes. No, not
my striped, pink PJ's, though that is tempting... jeans and a nice
top. Boots are recommended, as we will possibly be in the country and the ground
gets mushy, but they are not required.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Q: Will there be drinks or snacks at the Bootcamp?<br />
<br />
A: I can't really go more than 2 hours without food, so yes. For sure.
Yes. Hot coffee & tea, a cold beverage, plus fruit and chocolate
will all be provided, at the very least. :)<br />
<br />
<br />

I have felt your frustration. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
For years, I struggled with blurry, dark, and unpredictable photos while shooting in auto and program mode. Once I mastered manual settings, I found photography so much more enjoyable as I was able to produce artistic, properly exposed photos on a consistent basis.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<b><br /></b>
<b>On Sunday, January 10th, in Dalton, Pa I will be hosting the first Kim Winey Photography Bootcamp of 2016. </b></div>
<br />
To give everyone even more options, I am breaking my "Manual Settings Simplified" class into two segments. I highly, highly recommend that you opt for both sessions, but if shortness of time or shortness of funds is a factor, you now have the option of fast-tracking and attending session 1 only if that suits you.<br />
<br />
<br />
<b>Session 1 ~ $150 {1:00pm - 2:30pm} </b><br />
<br />
Manual Settings - Super Simplified!<br />
<br />
Join
me for a non-intimidating time of learning how to adjust your camera's settings to create consistent, properly exposed photos. Visual aids & inspiring images will be used to explain the three parts of the exposure triangle ~ ISO, aperture and shutter speed. <br />
<br />
During session 1 a small amount of time will be given to change the settings on your own camera
& observe the results of those changes. If time permits we will also have Q & A at the end of session 1.<br />
<br />
*You may opt to take just session 1 on January 10th and come back for
session 2 on a future Bootcamp day. Dates to be announced.*<br />
<br />
<br />
<b>Session 2 ~ $150 {2:45-4:15pm}</b><br />
<br />
Manual Settings - Super Simplified Part 2!<br /><br />
Now that the basics of the exposure triangle have been covered we will touch on a few more important camera details, then jump right into additional hands-on practice time to more fully explore and understand how shooting in manual mode works.<br />
<br />
<b><br />Sessions 1 & 2 combined in one day ~ $250 *A $50 savings* {1:00pm - 4:15pm} </b><br />
<b><br /></b>
<b><br /></b>By taking the full Manual Settings class you will be given both the knowledge needed to shoot in manual mode, as well as ample time to start honing your skills. Once the presentation portion of our class is complete, we will move around the property practicing the hows and whys of adjusting our camera's settings. The full class will also allow us more time to cover specific questions you may have about your photography skills.<br />
<br />
To secure your seat and sign up for our first Bootcamp of the year please email kimwineyphotography@gmail.com or call 717-689-3277. *Paypal is available on the right side of this blog and is ready to receive your Bootcamp payment.<br />
<br />
All Bootcamp students will also be added to our private Facebook group where additional support and information is given throughout the year.<br />
<br />
And new in 2016- all former Manual Settings Simplified students are welcome to join the class again, in a "silent seat". This option is complimentary and is available for any former students who have been a little too busy to practice their camera skills and would like a refresher course. Please email Kim to reserve your seat, as spaces are limited. <br />

<br />
The gown was especially unique in its creation, so I thought I'd share a few of the behind the scenes tidbits that came together to create this special fine art session.<br />
<br />
The clothes: <br />
<br />
Originally, I had planned to work with <a href="https://www.facebook.com/Lemondaisyboutique" target="_blank">Lemon Daisy Boutique</a> to create a one of a kind outfit. However, timing and circumstances didn't align for that to happen, so I channeled my inner <a href="http://www.inbedwithsue.com/blog/" target="_blank">Sue Bryce ~</a> photographer and gown-hacker extraordinaire ~ and searched thrift stores & antique shops for the perfect gown elements.<br />
<br />
Enter in~ the mother of the bride suit.<br />
<br />
A 50 cent mother of the bride suit, to be more exact.<br />
<br />
Yessss...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9RBpTa0akBGRQh6KE74Dytez_T5Za0iiZyfqTnl0KsEPmJUKlIpErmvQEhPtWRdndwwpolNiyCdovFORZiAMaDArUWgOjEFZbu1UWNnoGG3c4XekhKovTiSR3ssSkkWnwC5BTAJY2Vzc/s1600/0M8B9067.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9RBpTa0akBGRQh6KE74Dytez_T5Za0iiZyfqTnl0KsEPmJUKlIpErmvQEhPtWRdndwwpolNiyCdovFORZiAMaDArUWgOjEFZbu1UWNnoGG3c4XekhKovTiSR3ssSkkWnwC5BTAJY2Vzc/s640/0M8B9067.jpg" height="640" width="426" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I wasn't too keen on the top, but the skirt was a great shape for the nightgown-inspired-dress that I had in mind. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I took measurements and texted my sister to find out my niece, Brooke's, measurements.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It was perfect in length AND width. Woah! (Thanks, God!)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The color wasn't quite "earthy" enough for my taste, so I coffee stained it. I had to do it three times, as the fabric wasn't holding the stain well.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgtBj43UmbQcsH0EMHm4zVdesHnygrpji0YiL33TXXnxSVnzud9Ld2CZGAwpFq8UgArH_3GQRavfLP5XbQ8h31f7Ujfs2IMyoMRKchEECPHyc5t1Tyz7iBVcBHDa9_qSo5tBGK0MPojy44/s1600/0M8B9089.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgtBj43UmbQcsH0EMHm4zVdesHnygrpji0YiL33TXXnxSVnzud9Ld2CZGAwpFq8UgArH_3GQRavfLP5XbQ8h31f7Ujfs2IMyoMRKchEECPHyc5t1Tyz7iBVcBHDa9_qSo5tBGK0MPojy44/s640/0M8B9089.jpg" height="426" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I also scrunched the skirt, as it dried, to add some wrinkles and texture.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
When Brookie tried it on, it was itchy. So I "sewed" (aka hot glued) a slip to the inside of the skirt. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
For the "sleeves", I added a vintage, crocheted collar that I purchased in the same thrift store for 25 cents. These were attached via safety pins, which will allow me to use the skirt in new ways, in the future.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFSL3IvlS5x-8GSG4fAatGmRXLboKDsRAfKemCjCrNEIAj42BP27DyUBW2VaMiKhusJhjj3Y3eBP-8-L_XHBRjTpJK6SgglYHyE6eOpFNL_Sf99cr-CGZa7t54GCZZkdtb_uZznQI2COA/s1600/54.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFSL3IvlS5x-8GSG4fAatGmRXLboKDsRAfKemCjCrNEIAj42BP27DyUBW2VaMiKhusJhjj3Y3eBP-8-L_XHBRjTpJK6SgglYHyE6eOpFNL_Sf99cr-CGZa7t54GCZZkdtb_uZznQI2COA/s1600/54.jpg" height="640" width="426" /></a></div>
<br />
Aaaand of course, I coffee stained the collar as well, dipping it haphazardly to create a mottled look.<br />
<br />
The headpieces: <br />
<br />
The wreath was made from dried flowers that I stole from around my house (many of which were from my yarden, last year).<br />
<br />
***Now here's where I need your full attention...<br />
<br />
Don't ask me HOW I know this, but just as a PSA- I strongly recommend that as your are making your headpieces that you avoid the urge to place them on your head until the hot glue has 100% dried. Jusssst sayin'...<br />
<span id="goog_579936048"></span><span id="goog_579936049"></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi1qzobPXgqCvLE5720NmbwK_JUmflrN1fNUAmWU0FGgdaMK2p2ZGWkS4U_7MxKit7m5lUjGzx2QsilKxBfhjFWAQLwfKENt_ioWZQNHwOzhlHtQgo5AAvbd_wsxjIespK_SvhoTQcd7DU/s1600/211.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi1qzobPXgqCvLE5720NmbwK_JUmflrN1fNUAmWU0FGgdaMK2p2ZGWkS4U_7MxKit7m5lUjGzx2QsilKxBfhjFWAQLwfKENt_ioWZQNHwOzhlHtQgo5AAvbd_wsxjIespK_SvhoTQcd7DU/s1600/211.jpg" height="640" width="640" /></a></div>
<span id="goog_579936048"></span><span id="goog_579936049"></span><br />
The fascinator was again made from dried flowers and weeds (some from the side of the road). They were hot glued onto a metal clip to mimic a fascinator and birdcage.<br />
<br />
It was a lil slippery, and had to be adjusted multiple times, so its appearance in the shoot was brief.<br />
<br />
**Lesson learned. Get grippy clips. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWSItawAmIqBqszPg5zAtpRAos81GAkZTlfmfsOyqr1dwe0KJG3GJEpNQ7uGVYzHF7I1p8iTWdTlJj1WowobGMVvrseZuK6EQN9eGAOsirc74C5OxWrrNvsD2jLmJZb1sBFbp5iocNZxo/s1600/56.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWSItawAmIqBqszPg5zAtpRAos81GAkZTlfmfsOyqr1dwe0KJG3GJEpNQ7uGVYzHF7I1p8iTWdTlJj1WowobGMVvrseZuK6EQN9eGAOsirc74C5OxWrrNvsD2jLmJZb1sBFbp5iocNZxo/s1600/56.jpg" height="640" width="426" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
All totaled, the gown, slip, and headpieces cost less than $5. This sort of blows my mind, as this shoot is by far one of my favorites, but the cost of everything was so little. <br />
<br />
The ladies:<br />
<br />
My niece, Melanie, was my intern for the day. She loves photography and was such a big help! (Thank you, Mel!)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcHUGdHMSiyQjv-_t8diVUsyhH7qs8EK5OXQLRhLqz8_XSRAX-htdnkKg47Fj1Di4GKcBfCk0Th8oQwnZJ9AP0xObbuoBbEYOF5ESZzN8dbsVv9FuoTx69WNHbeYGxzIL98857fG7Kz1g/s1600/34.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcHUGdHMSiyQjv-_t8diVUsyhH7qs8EK5OXQLRhLqz8_XSRAX-htdnkKg47Fj1Di4GKcBfCk0Th8oQwnZJ9AP0xObbuoBbEYOF5ESZzN8dbsVv9FuoTx69WNHbeYGxzIL98857fG7Kz1g/s640/34.jpg" height="426" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
And my niece, Brooke, was my model for the day. Not only can she nail
her facial expressions without much prompting now, but she is a champ
with "ballet hands" as well.<br />
<br />
We even tried a few unique poses, but because of the shape of
the dress and her chilly toes, we were only able to capture one elegant
cheer leading + ballet hands pose. We will most likely do something creative with her posing in the future. Girlfriend has some moves!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjrE8BUSqu4oV0nMcaC6fmzzhDkETDvWeUCu8QKxy7xibZ_gyZXmYB_VbL5m5P6FK1sYM0cZdlvY6oliRLmCEgAiIIfkKuR8YlTUn9TjE3mV1DTfQlKPHzpMdwNV53uVyYCr5CxwgutBhA/s1600/19.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjrE8BUSqu4oV0nMcaC6fmzzhDkETDvWeUCu8QKxy7xibZ_gyZXmYB_VbL5m5P6FK1sYM0cZdlvY6oliRLmCEgAiIIfkKuR8YlTUn9TjE3mV1DTfQlKPHzpMdwNV53uVyYCr5CxwgutBhA/s640/19.jpg" height="426" width="640" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
While "fine art" poses and expressions were the goal, we had a good time capturing a few shots of Brookie's true 11 year old self, as well. lol</div>

<br /></div>

<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
It's OK to temporarily derail your business, when a family crisis occurs.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
Shortly after my dad passed away, an article came up in my Facebook news feed. The title was something like- "5 Ways to Avoid Derailing Your Business During a Crisis".</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
While the general intention was good, it made me angry.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
I LOVE my job. Like REALLY love my job. My clients are crazy awesome, my creative mind gets a daily workout, the pay is enough to contribute to my family in a meaningful way, basically aside from paying taxes and returning phone calls, it's quite perfect for me.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
But, I will derail it again, and again, for the sake of my family. </div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
Now before you start arguing in your mind, saying- "But, Miss Kimmi, you own your business. You have the flexibility to put it on hold without much consequence." Please know- that is only paaaaartially true. The problem is- when the sole worker at a business stops working, the business stops working. Which means we lost a lot of money (and a few clients), due to cancelled shoots. </div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
I don't share that for a pat on the back or a sympathetic "awe". We made it through and are OK now. I share this with you to empower and encourage you to make the decisions that will allow you to look back on a time of crisis with no regrets. </div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
Your business or work may be the direction you have to go in. Maybe you're the sole bread winner in your family. Maybe you don't have a choice. But if you do and you're on the fence, please believe me- It IS OK to derail your business. You will have the rest of your life to get it back on track, once the crisis is over. But you may not have the rest of your life to help, encourage, and spend time with your loved ones. Because "the crisis is over" may actually mean "your loved one has died" and no amount of money or clients lost will make you regret the time that you gave to your family.</div>

Please use your powers carefully.</span><br />
<div>
<div style="color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
We had many amazing medical professionals walk through my dad's life, as he battled cancer. In general the level of care that he received was good and for that we are very grateful.</div>
<div style="color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
But there were a few people who handled themselves in unprofessional and occasionally infuriating ways, which caused great stress to myself and my family.</div>
<div style="color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
Mistakes are understandable. But no one should have the burdens of insensitivity, unprofessionalism, or ineptness added to the burdens of a terminal diagnosis, or any illness for that matter. </div>
<div style="color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
Some of the requests below seem basic and shouldn't need to be said. But given our experiences, I think it's worth putting out there, in the hopes that other patients receive more thoughtful care.</div>
<div style="color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
...</div>
<div style="color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
Please introduce yourself to the patient, before talking about personal things with your coworkers. </div>
<div style="color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
Please read the charts and become familiar with the person's history before asking a barrage of questions. </div>
<div style="color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
Please weigh your words and choose your inflections carefully.</div>
<div style="color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
Please follow through with your staff to be sure that details don't slip through the cracks. </div>
<div style="color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
Please communicate regularly with other doctors and personnel who are treating your patient. And if the patient passes away, please let everyone know in a timely manner.</div>
<div style="color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
Please schedule tests or exams in a timely manner.</div>
<div style="color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
Please keep on top of needed medical supplies.</div>
<div style="color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
Please make sure that all medical supplies are thoroughly cleaned and operating properly before delivery.</div>
<div style="color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
Please return phone calls. But not with your butt, because it's extremely frustrating to be on the phone with a doctor, but not be heard by said doctor.</div>
<div style="color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
Please treat your patients with the same care that you would want for your family. </div>
<div style="color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
And when delivering bad news to your patients, please make them feel as if their needs are the only things on your mind in that moment- because I can assure you, your help is the only thing that is on their minds in that moment. </div>
</div>

Do what you can, while you can. Don't wait until it gets better, because it may never get better.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
This became one of my mantras, after my dad, Jack, was diagnosed with lung cancer. While it may sound like a pesimistic outlook, it proved to be one of the best decisions that I ever made.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
At the start of each "phase" (suspicion of cancer, diagnosis, treatments, decline) I asked myself- if this is the best he's going to be for the rest of his life, what should we do now, that we may not be able to do in a few weeks or days...</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
We took more pictures, we made more visits, my brother's family came in from Thailand sooner instead of waiting, we went hunting, we worked on his gun, we watched Harry Potter... ;) </div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
Had we waited till he felt better, looked better, got off his oxygen, or till "the worst was over", we never would have done these things. </div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
Please. If you have a loved one who is ill, don't wait till they are better. Do things now, while you can. And if God gives healing and your loved one overcomes their illness, celebrate! And then do more things! </div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
If my dad had been healed, I would still cherish the photos that I took and the memories that we made, during his illness. But if I had not had the courage to take the photos or if I had not created new memories, because I was waiting till he was better... I would be filled with regret today.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
Do what you can, while you can.</div>

There is more to death than death, for the people who are left behind.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
Having never lost someone this close to me before, I was ill prepared for the amount of thought, decision making and emotions that would come with my dad's death.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
Prior to this experience, I had mostly just thought about the sadness in the people who were left behind, and the eternal resting place of the person who had passed. </div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
I had never considered the many other things that accompany death.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
The removal of the body.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
Contacting people and breaking the news.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
Writing the obituary.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
Planning the burial.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
Planning the memorial service.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
Picking memorial cards for the service.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
Planning a meal, after the service.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
Selecting the tombstone. </div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
Wording on the tombstone.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
The timing of the tombstone's placement.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
Filing legal documents.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
Changing names on accounts.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
Organizing the deceased person's belongings.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
Distributing or storing the belongings.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
Putting away the medical supplies.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
It's overwhelming just thinking about those tasks, let alone doing them right after you lose someone you love.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
I totally get why God makes us numb, at first. Such a beautiful coping mechanism...</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
And then there are the every day questions and decisions such as:</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
What will my mom do now?</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
Will she live in the big house by herself?</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
Does she have enough money to live comfortably?</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
Does she have enough health insurance?</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
Who will take care of the property? </div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
Who will take care of the horses and ponies?</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
Who will fix the sink?</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
On and on it goes...</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
The void left behind by a person who passes is so much bigger than I'd imagined.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
There is so much more to death than death...</div>

And breaks.</span><br />
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
In my previous post, I mentioned how much time and energy my mom put into caring for my dad, at the end of his life. </div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
Unfortunately, it's one of those posts that falls flat when comparing it to reality. You just don't know what a caregiver goes through unless you see it or experience it first hand. So if you haven't, I just ask that you trust me and believe me- it is very, very difficult to be the primary caregiver of someone, especially a full grown adult. And we should thank them. Over. And over. Again.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
Adding to that, another lesson I learned was that the primary caregiver needs as much support as the person with the illness.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
Sending notes of encouragement, visiting them, bringing food, praying for them (and with them), etc... yes. yes. yes. These are incredibly helpful for the caregiver. </div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
But the primary caregiver needs a break now and then too. And that's a whole other ballgame. </div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
My mom gave round-the-clock care to my dad. There were times that she needed to go and take care of things outside of the house, but it was very hard for her. Not only because she didn't want to leave him for fear of what could happen while she was gone, but because it was extremely difficult for her to trust another person to care for him, as well as she would.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
My encouragement to anyone reading this is- if you have a loved one who requires constant care and you are not the primary caregiver, step up. Learn the routines. Ask questions. Take notes. Earn the trust of the primary caregiver by showing them that you know how to provide quality care. And make yourself available to care for the loved one, so that the primary caregiver can have a break, when needed. </div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
Because it is needed.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
*This post (or any of my posts) should not be interpreted as a secret message to my family that they didn't step up enough. 1) If/when I have an issue with my family, it's handled directly, not via the internet. And 2) Our family came together to help in a variety of ways. We are more bonded because of our experiences and the support that we gave each other. So please no reading between the lines. I say what I mean both online and in person. :)</div>

And possibly a medal. </span><br />
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
During the end of my dad's illness, I stayed with my parents quite often. I saw first hand the amount of work that my mom put into caring for my dad. </div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
Organizing and administering his meds, making his food, refreshing his coffee, helping with his oxygen compressors and tubes, getting things that he needed, communicating with medical personnel, preparing items for his shower, doting on him, you name it, my mom did it. </div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
Caregiving was her full time job.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
It never stopped. Even when it stopped.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
Meaning- even when she wasn't actively doing something for him she was "on". Aware. Paying attention. Listening. And ready to move quickly if he needed her. She was physically doing a lot, but then even when she was "resting", she wasn't truly resting. It was exhausting just watching it, let alone living it.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
As his primary care giver, her whole life revolved around keeping my dad as comfortable as possible and doing what was in her power to extend his life.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">

<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
That wasn't a misprint. It's a statement worth repeating. And digesting. And then maybe even reading again.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
Her life was fully engaged in taking care of him.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>

<div>
At some point during the last months of my dad's life it dawned on me- I had been very active in asking questions and helping where I could, but I hadn't actually THANKED my mom for caring for my dad. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I guess there was a part of me that thought- well of course she would take care of him. He's her husband and she loves him. I would do the same in her shoes.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I took her actions for granted.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
And I was wrong to do that.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The amount of work, patience, and strength that was poured into his caregiving deserved many, many thanks. She temporarily put her life on hold to devote herself to whatever life my dad had left. And I am so thankful for that.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>

*For those who are new, I have two dads. My biological dad, Roger, is still alive and well. These posts are about my step-dad, Jack, who along with my mom raised me (and many siblings) from the time I was 2 1/2 years old. Jack passed away on December 2, 2014, at the age of 62, due to lung cancer. </div>

Lessons I've learned along the way # 15</div>
<div style="color: #141823; font-family: helvetica, arial, 'lucida grande', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19px; margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
I can choose what has power over me.</div>
<div style="color: #141823; font-family: helvetica, arial, 'lucida grande', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19px; margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
In October, my dad's lung cancer diagnosis went from stage 3a, to stage 4- terminal cancer. This changed everything.</div>
<div class="text_exposed_show" style="color: #141823; display: inline; font-family: helvetica, arial, 'lucida grande', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19px;">
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px;">
Plans changed. Emotions changed. Perspectives changed. </div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
Everything changed.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
The quaint cemetery on the road to my parents house was one of the most surprising changes, for me. </div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
I used to love it. The stone walls... the wrought iron gate... the quintessential white church, across the road... everything was just charming.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
But after the final diagnoses, it became my enemy.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
I wanted my dad to live and reside in his home. While the cemetery wanted my dad to die and reside in it's ground. </div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
My mind gave the cemetery a personality. A desire. And a life (oh the irony). Every time we drove by it, it taunted me and I became angry at it.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
After my dad passed, we held his burial there. The cemetery had won.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
Now, it held even more emotional power over me.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
My heart broke again and again, at the sight of it. How could this have happened? I couldn't believe my dad was there... And if I wanted to visit him, I had to go into it- to the place that stole my dad from us.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
On Christmas day especially, my spirit battled. I felt as though visiting his grave was the right thing to do. I wanted to visit him. But I didn't.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
Instead I had an epiphany that night.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
I realized that I had been giving power to something that deserved no power.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
My dad's body is buried in that graveyard. </div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
Yes.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
But my dad is not there.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
His soul is in heaven. </div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
And his memories are everywhere else. </div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
In that moment, I took away the cemetery's emotional impact on me and replaced it with this perspective-</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
It does not matter where my dad's body is. I do not need to visit his resting place to feel him. He did not live in that cemetery. I have no happy memories of him there.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
I have happy memories of my dad in his big brown chair, teasing the kids, carving the turkey, working on the tractor, eating breakfast with my mom, hunting, fishing, and laughing. Always laughing.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
The things that remind me of my dad's LIFE deserve my emotional attention. Not the things that remind me of his death. </div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
The cemetery holds no power over me now.</div>
</div>

It is not common to share the details of a person's passing. However, God orchestrated such a beautiful ending to my dad's life that it needs to be shared...</div>
<div style="color: #141823; font-family: helvetica, arial, 'lucida grande', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19px; margin-bottom: 6px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="color: #141823; font-family: helvetica, arial, 'lucida grande', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19px; margin-bottom: 6px;">
As the last few hours drew near, we found ourselves once again all piled on and around my parent's bed, as my dad slept soundly and snored loudly.</div>
<div style="color: #141823; font-family: helvetica, arial, 'lucida grande', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19px; margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
We stayed true to ourselves and instead of being quiet and somber, we gave Daddy what he was used to, and expected- loud laughter, much mischievousness, and a rousing game of cards between the sisters who were present. </div>
<div style="color: #141823; font-family: helvetica, arial, 'lucida grande', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19px; margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
After the games, I said- "I'm going to spend some more time with Daddy now." and went to sit by him.</div>
<div style="color: #141823; font-family: helvetica, arial, 'lucida grande', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19px; margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
There were praise and worship songs playing by us, and I felt a prompting to ask Fred to sing a few songs, with me.</div>
<div style="color: #141823; font-family: helvetica, arial, 'lucida grande', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19px; margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
To maintain the mood of the room we chose three upbeat songs from my phone. The first two were "Joy to the World" by Seabird- so he could hear one last Christmas song. And "Guiding Me Home" by Stomptown Revival. To be honest we chose "Guiding Me Home" without fully thinking through the words. But as they came out of our mouths, it was clear that God was setting the scene for my dad's homecoming.</div>
<div style="color: #141823; font-family: helvetica, arial, 'lucida grande', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19px; margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
Oh, Light of the hollows<br />The wind is filled with Your echoes<br />Your clouds as canopies,<br />Your rain, it covers me<br />You are wherever I roam…</div>
<div style="color: #141823; font-family: helvetica, arial, 'lucida grande', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19px; margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
You are the Reason…<br />Our souls carry on-- beyond this brief life<br />-Through every season…<br />Your beacon of love<br />Shines in the dark…<br />… you’re guiding me home…</div>
<div style="color: #141823; font-family: helvetica, arial, 'lucida grande', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19px; margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
Oh Lord of our Sorrows,<br />Lead on- dear Lord I will follow<br />Until the trumpet sounds<br />‘Till mirth and joy abound…<br />you whisper peace to my soul…</div>
<div style="color: #141823; font-family: helvetica, arial, 'lucida grande', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19px; margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
this train is tearing through the night black tunnel<br />I see a light, it’s distant but I know…it’s coming…<br />I believe in the days to come-- I’ll look up from my slumber-- and I’ll see my Lord<br />…Guiding me home</div>
<div style="color: #141823; font-family: helvetica, arial, 'lucida grande', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19px; margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
We sang one more song, "Manifesto" by The City Harmonic- which includes a creed and the Lord's Prayer.</div>
<div style="color: #141823; font-family: helvetica, arial, 'lucida grande', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19px; margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
By the time we finished, my sister Betsy had arrived. Those who were able to come were now all around him.</div>
<div style="color: #141823; font-family: helvetica, arial, 'lucida grande', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19px; margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
I leaned in, kissed my dad on the head and just started talking... I told him how much we loved him; that he had been such a good father and husband; that he had raised such a great family, and that we would take care of Mommy; that it was OK for him to go to heaven, and Jesus was there to give him his new lungs; that I would see him there in a few years... On and on I talked. I had said some of these things before to him, but this time it was different. I truly believe that I was a vessel being used by God, to deliver messages that my dad needed to hear, in order to leave in peace.</div>
<div style="color: #141823; font-family: helvetica, arial, 'lucida grande', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19px; margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
As I ended my talk, my dad's head rose from the pillow with a gasp. We called for my mom, who was at the foot of the bed. She ran to him, laid on his chest and wept, as he passed peacefully from her arms, into the arms of Christ.</div>
<div style="color: #141823; font-family: helvetica, arial, 'lucida grande', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19px; margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
...</div>
<div style="color: #141823; font-family: helvetica, arial, 'lucida grande', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19px; margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
My heart hurts. It hurts so much. I struggle with the suffering that he endured in the weeks leading up to his death. I cry when I think about him not being with us anymore. Disbelief and devastation wash over me without warning. But with this big, crazy family that my dad and mom created the smiles far, far, far outweigh the tears. That was the example that Daddy set for us. And that is how we will honor his memory- with love filled laughter, ample sarcasm, never ending teasing and most importantly- unshakable faith that we will be with him again, someday.</div>
<div style="color: #141823; display: inline; font-family: helvetica, arial, 'lucida grande', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19px; margin-top: 6px;">
I love you, Daddy... we'll see you soon.</div>

Questions I've gained along the way #3</div>
<div style="color: #141823; font-family: helvetica, arial, 'lucida grande', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19px; margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
After a loved one dies, people often say- "I'd pay any amount of money to have just one more day with them.... to hear their voice again... to hug them..."</div>
<div style="color: #141823; font-family: helvetica, arial, 'lucida grande', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19px; margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
So why don't more people sacrifice money, time on the job, etc... to be with their loved ones as much as possible, while they are alive? </div>
<div class="text_exposed_show" style="color: #141823; display: inline; font-family: helvetica, arial, 'lucida grande', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19px;">
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px;">
Everyone's days are limited. Cancer or not. Why do people wait till it's too late to understand that there is nothing on this earth that is more precious than time with loved ones. Nothing.</div>
</div>
